I'm really just guessing Nipper. Next time i'm in the studio i'll ask an engineer for an informal video mastering tutorial.

My inkling is that everything is recorded in digital format, both audio and video. What can be done in terms of syncing and tweaking in a good digital PC mastering process is nothing short of miraculous.
